The Department of Physical Education was organised as an independent department in 1989.

In different years the leading specialists of physical education and sport of RK worked at the department:

  • Abdraimov Nursultan Ismailovich
  • Goranko Mikhail Ivanovich – Professor, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences
  • Nurmanov Ramazan Nurmanovich – two-time winner of the USSR Cup
  • Mustafina Alfiya Ravilievna – Master of Sport International Class in Rugby
  • Karatygina Svetlana Nikolayevna – Master of Sport International Class in Rugby, Master of Sports in Basketball
  • Kitaigorodskaya Anastasia Sergeyevna – Master of Sports in rugby
  • Bekbulatova Oksana Rashitovna – Maaster of Sports in basketball.

The first head of the department was Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor, Master of Sports of the USSR Grinyuk Larisa Semenovna.

From 2001 to 2008 the department was headed by Turskeldin Sailau Altynbaevich, Honoured Worker of Culture of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Honoured Coach of the Kazakh SSR, Excellent Educator of the USSR, two-time champion of Asia in track and field athletics among veterans.

Since 2009 the department has been headed by Mashkova Valentina Leonidovna, a judge of the National category of the Republic of Kazakhstan in athletics. She has been working at Almaty Technological University since 1991.

Much attention is paid to the development of professional level of teaching staff at ATU.

The professorial and teaching staff of the department annually take advanced training courses.

The methodology of teaching physical education includes two main sections provided for in the programme: practical, control.

In addition, classes can be organised in streams. To monitor and control the dynamics and physical fitness of students, classes are held in two courses of study. at the beginning and at the end of the academic year control tests (speed running, jumping, strength exercises, etc.), allowing to effectively assess the level of development of basic physical qualities.

Assessment of progress in physical education is carried out according to the rating system, the points of which correspond to the data of current accounting and special testing of knowledge, skills and abilities.

When giving a differentiated credit, students' attendance and activity in classes are taken into account. The results of completing the control norms stipulated by the programme.

Practical section. The training material of this section is aimed at increasing the level of functional and motor abilities, at mastering the methods and means of physical culture and sports activities.

Control section. The material of this section is aimed at differentiated and objective accounting of the process and results of students' learning activity.
